- 2 pounds beef chuck, cut into cubes
- 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
- 1 onion, chopped
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 tablespoon ginger, minced
- 2 carrots, cut into chunks
- 3 cups beef broth
- 2 tablespoons fish sauce
- 1 tablespoon sugar
- 1 teaspoon ground black pepper
- 1 tablespoon five-spice powder
- 1 star anise
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 bunch fresh cilantro, for garnish
- 1 bunch green onions, for garnish
Instructions
- In a pot, heat the vegetable oil over medium heat. Add the chopped onion, garlic, and ginger; sauté until fragrant.
- Add the beef cubes and brown on all sides.
- Stir in the carrots, beef broth, fish sauce, sugar, black pepper, five-spice powder, star anise, and salt.
- Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for 1.5 to 2 hours, until the beef is tender.
- Serve hot, garnished with fresh cilantro and green onions.
