Description

This crispy fried calamari served with a tangy aioli makes for an irresistible appetizer.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound calamari, cleaned and cut into rings
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 cup vegetable oil, for frying
  • 1/2 cup mayonnaise
  • 2 tablespoons lemon juice
  • 1 clove garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
  • 1 teaspoon chopped fresh parsley

Instructions

  1. In a bowl, combine buttermilk, paprika, salt, and pepper. Add calamari and marinate for at least 30 minutes.
  2. Heat oil in a deep pan over medium heat.
  3. In a separate bowl, place the flour. Dredge the marinated calamari in the flour.
  4. Fry the calamari in batches until golden and crispy, about 2-3 minutes.
  5. Remove and drain on paper towels.
  6. For the aioli, mix mayonnaise, lemon juice, garlic, Dijon mustard, and parsley in a bowl.
  7. Serve the fried calamari with the zingy aioli on the side.

Notes

  • Make sure the oil is hot enough before frying to get a crispy texture.
  • The aioli can be made a few hours in advance and stored in the refrigerator.
