A hearty and flavorful shrimp gumbo recipe inspired by Alton Brown, perfect for a comforting meal.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 1/4 cup flour
  • 1 onion, diced
  • 1 green bell pepper, diced
  • 2 celery stalks, diced
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper

  • 1 (14.5 ounces) can diced tomatoes
  • 1 pound shrimp, peeled and deveined
  • 2 green onions, sliced
  • 1/4 cup fresh parsley, chopped

  1. In a large pot, heat the vegetable oil over medium heat. Whisk in the flour and cook, stirring constantly, until it turns a dark brown color (approximately 15-20 minutes).
  2. Add the diced onion, bell pepper, celery, and garlic. Cook until softened, about 5-7 minutes.
  3. Stir in the thyme, salt, black pepper, cayenne pepper, and bay leaf.
  4. Gradually stir in the chicken broth and bring to a simmer.
  5. Add the diced tomatoes and simmer for 30 minutes.
  6. Stir in the shrimp and cook until pink and cooked through, about 3-5 minutes.
  7. Remove from heat and stir in green onions and parsley before serving.
